Custom Label Whiskey: From Design to Delivery

Custom label whiskey is a Terebelo bottle with a label made for you. You choose the occasion, the wording and the artwork, you approve a proof, and then the bottles are labeled and delivered. The part that surprises people is timing. Design, approval and production all take real time, and the holidays are crowded. Terebelo is offering 10 percent off early custom label orders for Holiday 2026, so the best move is to start now.

I get asked about this at the tasting bar constantly, usually by someone holding a half-finished gift list. So here is the whole path, in plain order.

What custom label whiskey actually is

It is real Terebelo spirit from our New York distillery with a personalized label. That might be a name, a date, a short message, a logo or a piece of artwork. It is a bottle that says “this was made for you” instead of “this was the last thing I grabbed at the register.”

People use it for wedding favors, anniversaries, retirement gifts, client gifts, grand openings and family gatherings. Terebelo is a family business, so we like a bottle that marks a family occasion.

How custom label whiskey works, step by step

Every project is a little different, and I will be straight with you about that. Here is the general shape, and we will confirm the specifics when you reach out.

  1. Decide the occasion and the headcount. How many bottles, and by what date? Those two answers drive almost everything else.
  2. Choose your spirit. Browse the Terebelo shop to see the line, then ask which bottlings are available for custom labels. Our bourbon is made from 100 percent corn, and the line includes a Jamaican Rum Cask Finish. If you are matching a bottle to a person, this is the fun part.
  3. Write the label copy. Keep it short. Names, a date and one line of text read well on a bottle. A paragraph does not.
  4. Send artwork or ideas. A logo, a monogram, a family crest, a hand-drawn sketch. If you have a high-resolution file, send it. If you only have an idea, say so.
  5. Review a proof. You will see how the label looks before anything is printed. Check every name, every date and every spelling out loud. Then have someone else check it.
  6. Production. Once the proof is approved, the labels are made and applied to the bottles.
  7. Delivery. Your bottles are packed and sent to you. For gifts going to several addresses or events on a hard date, tell us up front.

Why a label has rules

A whiskey label is not just a sticker. In the United States, the federal Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB) sets what has to appear on it. The TTB has a specific category called personalized labels, and it is built for exactly this kind of project.

The short version: a label can carry a personal message, picture or artwork for a customer, as long as it meets the minimum mandatory label requirements. You can read the definition in the federal regulation on personalized labels, and the TTB’s own guidance explains how it works.

One thing that matters for your design: the personalizing area is for the personal stuff. Under the TTB rules, it does not allow adding information that discusses the spirit or its characteristics. So a label can say “Congratulations, Dana and Sam, June 14,” but it is not the place for claims about the whiskey. Mandatory items like the brand name and the product type stay put.

I am a distiller, not a lawyer, so treat this as background and not legal advice. The practical takeaway is simple. Keep your text personal, and we will help you keep it label-ready.

Lead times: what I can and cannot tell you

You would like a number of days. I do not want to hand you a made-up one, because the honest answer is that it depends. These are the things that move the clock:

  • How finished your design is. Final artwork and approved wording save time. A rough idea needs more back and forth.
  • How many proof rounds you need. Every change restarts the review. Decide who signs off before you start.
  • Quantity. Ten bottles and a few hundred are different jobs.
  • Your delivery date. A wedding on a fixed Saturday is a different project than a gift for whenever.
  • The season. November and December are busy for everyone who makes, prints and ships things.

When you contact us, give us your event date and ask for a realistic timeline for your order. Then add a cushion. Nobody has ever complained that their bottles showed up too early.

Custom label ideas that work

Good labels are simple. Some ideas that tend to land well with adult guests and recipients:

  • Wedding or anniversary bottles. Names, the date and a short line of thanks.
  • Groomsmen and bridal party gifts. A name or initials on each bottle makes it feel chosen.
  • Retirement or milestone gifts. Years of service, a name and a simple sign-off.
  • Client and team gifts. A company logo with a holiday message. Plan these early, since corporate calendars fill fast.
  • Grand openings. Mark the day your doors opened with a bottle people can keep.
  • Family gatherings. A family name and the year, a nice bottle for the shelf.

A few design tips from the bar. Use fewer fonts than you think you need. Leave empty space, since a crowded label looks like a flea market. Make sure the text is readable at arm’s length. And if you are choosing between a clever joke and a heartfelt line, pick the one you will still like in ten years.

Custom label bottles are for adults of legal drinking age, and they are meant to be enjoyed responsibly. Our labels are about marking the occasion, not the volume.

Kashrut and special requests

Every Terebelo spirit is Star-K kosher certified. If kosher status matters for your event, mention it when you place your order, and check with Star-K or your own rabbi about your specific needs. That is their call, not mine.

Why order early this holiday season

Three reasons, in order of how much they matter:

  1. Time. Proofs, approvals and production all need room. Rushing is where typos get through.
  2. Choice. You get more flexibility on design and delivery when the calendar is not jammed.
  3. Price. Terebelo’s Holiday 2026 offer takes 10 percent off early custom label orders.

It is October 25 as I write this. If your gift list includes a date in December, you are closer to the deadline than it feels. If you want to see who is behind the bottles first, here is the Moonshiners: Master Distiller episode where I appeared on Discovery.

How long does a custom label order take?
